Why accessibility is now mandatory

A legal requirement since 2025

With the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG), digital accessibility has been mandatory for many companies – especially in B2C and e-commerce – since 28 June 2025. I bring your WordPress website up to this standard in a legally sound way.

Lower your warning & fine risk

Non-accessible offerings can be warned off (“Abmahnung”) and result in fines. A BFSG-compliant website protects you from this risk and from reputational damage.

Reach a larger audience

Around one in ten people in Germany lives with an impairment. Accessibility opens your website to customers you could not serve before – a direct revenue lever.

Better Google rankings

Clean semantics, meaningful alt text and clear structure are the foundation of accessibility – and exactly what Google rewards. Accessibility and SEO go hand in hand.

A better experience for everyone

Clear contrast, good keyboard operation and understandable forms help every visitor – not only people with disabilities. That lowers bounce rates and increases conversions.

A stronger brand image

Being accessible shows attitude. Inclusion is a visible signal of quality and responsibility that charges your brand positively.

Is your website already BFSG-compliant?

Request accessibility

Why choose me?

WordPress & WooCommerce specialist

I make your existing WordPress or WooCommerce system accessible – without forcing a “start from scratch”. Theme, plugins and checkout are improved in a targeted way instead of being thrown away.

BFSG & WCAG knowledge from practice

I work concretely along WCAG 2.1 (Level AA), the authoritative standard behind the BFSG – implemented pragmatically, not just as a checklist on paper.

No forced relaunch

In most cases an existing site can be made accessible step by step. I prioritise the points with the greatest legal and practical leverage first.

Senior experience & clear communication

12 years of professional experience as a freelancer, transparent quotes and a clear process – so you always know where your accessibility project stands.

Everything my BFSG service includes

BFSG quick check & audit

I review your website against the WCAG 2.1 AA criteria and deliver a prioritised action plan – you know exactly where you stand and what needs to be done.

WCAG 2.1-compliant implementation

Contrast, keyboard operation, focus order, ARIA labelling, semantic HTML and correct form labels are implemented directly in your WordPress theme.

Accessibility statement

I support you with the accessibility statement required by the BFSG – including a feedback mechanism for your users.

Screen reader & keyboard optimisation

Your website is tested with a screen reader and pure keyboard navigation, so it is fully operable even without a mouse or screen.

Ongoing compliance

Accessibility is not a one-off project. On request I keep your site permanently compliant as part of my WordPress maintenance.

Training & editorial guidelines

So new content stays accessible, I give your team simple rules – for example for alt text, heading structure and plain language.

Accessibility that actually works

For me, accessibility is not a tick on a checklist but real operability. I test your site with a screen reader and pure keyboard navigation – the way people with impairments actually use it.

Instead of an expensive full relaunch, I work pragmatically: first the points with the greatest legal and practical leverage, then the fine-tuning. That way you become compliant quickly, without blowing your budget.

And because new content quickly creates new barriers, I give your team clear rules and, on request, keep the site permanently compliant.

Checklist: accessible WordPress website

These points form the foundation of a BFSG-compliant website to WCAG 2.1. They give you a first overview of what I work on during an accessible implementation – a detailed guide is also available in my blog post on accessibility.

Sufficient colour contrast

Text must stand out clearly from the background. WCAG 2.1 AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text. Tools like the WebAIM Contrast Checker help with the check.

Meaningful alt text

Every content-relevant image needs a descriptive alternative text so screen readers can read it out. Purely decorative images get an empty alt attribute so they are skipped.

Full keyboard operation

Every function – menus, forms, sliders, checkout – must be operable with the keyboard alone. The focus must be visible and follow a logical order.

Correctly labelled forms

Every input field needs an associated label. Error messages must be clearly understandable and detectable by screen readers too – especially important in the checkout and in contact forms.

Clear structure & headings

A logical heading hierarchy (H1–H6) and semantic HTML (landmarks, lists, buttons instead of click divs) are the backbone of accessibility – and good for SEO at the same time.

Accessibility statement

The BFSG requires a published accessibility statement including a feedback option. I support you in setting this up correctly and understandably.

Frequently asked questions

What is the BFSG and who does it affect?

The German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) transposes the European Accessibility Act into German law and has applied since 28 June 2025. It requires many companies – particularly in B2C, online shops, service providers and digital product vendors – to make their offerings accessible. Whether you are specifically affected, we clarify in an initial call.

Do I have to rebuild my website completely?

In most cases, no. Existing WordPress and WooCommerce websites can usually be made accessible step by step. I first check which points have the greatest leverage and implement those in a targeted way.

What does WCAG 2.1 Level AA mean?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 are the international standard for web accessibility. Level AA is the level the BFSG refers to in practice – it covers contrast, keyboard operation, text alternatives, clear structure and operability.

How long does an accessible implementation take?

That depends on the scope and condition of your website. After the audit you receive a clear action plan with an effort estimate. Small sites are often compliant within a few days; larger shops take correspondingly longer.
